The designer

The designer who set out to reinvent the clock.

Josep Vera Arús studied industrial design at the Massana School of Art and Design in Barcelona and has spent more than thirty years designing for public and private organisations. After the economic crisis he decided to focus on design clocks, a field he felt was short of ideas and novelty. In 2012 he founded Tothora.

His pieces are instantly recognisable: geometric shapes, asymmetry and hours shifted to one side, as if time had stepped aside to make room for the sculpture. Josep draws every model and keeps a close eye on how it is made.

The workshop

How a Tothora design is made.

The originals have always been built by hand in Barcelona, by craft cabinetmakers and with a Mediterranean character. There are six steps, and Josep knows every one of them in detail.

  1. The drawingEvery model is born in Josep’s notebook. New designs are registered with a notary before they are presented.
  2. The woodBoards of beech, oak, walnut, wenge or cedar are chosen from forests with controlled felling.
  3. The cabinetmakingPieces are cut, bent and turned by hand. A Loop or Surf sheet is moulded in a single piece.
  4. The finishNatural wood that shows its grain, or hand lacquering in black, white, garnet and other colours.
  5. The heartA reliable, silent German quartz movement: no tick-tock here.
  6. The reviewJosep checks the first pieces so that they come out exactly as he designed them.
